部分原文:
Intelligent behaviour in birdsMany people are aware ofthe intelligence ofchimpanzeesandother mammals. However;birdsalso demonstrateintelligent behaviour
A
For centuries, many scholars maintained that humans werethe only intelligentorganism on Earth. Many traits wereconsidered to be exclusively human examplesof acumenfor example, language, tool use, deception, awareness of selfandothers. However, exciting new research on a number ofanimals, particularlybirds, has called into question theuniqueness of these traits, forcing us toreconsider thisopinion. In 1964, people were amazed when naturalistJaneGoodalltzx first discovered chimpanzees making and usingtools. Butornithologists, people who study birds. were notoverly surprised. Almost 20years earlier,a renownedornithologist had shown that tool use was commonplaceinpopulations ofwoodpecker finchesresidingontheGal¡pagos Islands. These tiny birds routinely used twigs toextract grubs fromunder bark.
B
Since then, the catalogue of tool-using animals has grown. At least three Australianbird species make tools similar tothose of the woodpecker finch, and whenwhite-wingedchoughs come across shellfish they have been known to userocks ashammers to crack open the recalcitrant shells,Otherbirds show a moresophisticated level of insight. Forexample, black kites have been reporteddropping bait intolakes to bring fish to the surface of the water, therebymaking them easier to catch. A kite may also pick up asmouldering stickfrom an area recently burned by a bush fireand drop the stick on a patch of unburned grass, The birdthen feasts on thesmall animals that flee from thesubsequent fire.
