Discussions on the three theories that explain the mass mortality of marine animals found in a desert of Chile.
Reading
Pros:
1. Earthquake by plate shifts made the area a lagoon, then water gradually evaporated, both of which led to the mass death of marine animals;
2. Some kind of deadly virus killed them all.
3. Algae containing toxic materials bloomed, and toxicants accumulated in marine animals' bodies, causing mass death.
Listening
Cons:
1. Water evaporated, minerals must have been preserved. However, none was found.
2. A deadly virus may kill one specific species, or closely related speicies. It is impossible for one virus to kill marine mammals and fishes simultaneously.
3. Marine herbivores had no chance to be infected, because the amount of toxicants was too limited to kill the large marine mammals. The theory cannot explain those large mammals' death.
