备考托福听力的小伙伴们一定有过经历过很多很长又听不懂的句子。听不懂的原因是多方面的，例如，内容难度较高，句子语法结构复杂或者出现连读爆破等音变现象。

1. 内容难度较高

托福听力内容涉及到的学术领域较多，需要具备一定的背景知识。

例如:

1. In the villa of Tiberius, an early emperor, in his villa on the Mediterranean coast near Naples, archaeologists found a lot of marble fragments which when put together turned out to be a group of massive marble sculptures of creatures out of Roman mythology.

这句话节选自托福听力考试中考古学真题，不难发现，里面涉及到很多的考古学的词汇，例如Tiberius、Mediterranean coast、Naples、Roman mythology等等。

2. When archaeologists first looked around Diocletian’s estate, which is located in modern day Croatia, they found an aqueduct designed to carry water to the villa, but it seemed much too big just to be supplying a residence.  

这句话同理，涉及到一些特定的人名地名还有建筑名词，Diocletian、Croatia和aqueduct（高架水渠）。

2. 语法结构较复杂

长难句之所以比较长，是因为其中包含了多个从句、并列句、非谓语动词、倒装结构等复杂的语法关系，因此，很多学生不能一下理解内容，增加了理解的难度。

其次，无论是lecture还是conversation都是口语体，很多时候并不完全遵从语法规则，会让句子变得很令人困惑。

例如：

1.And the map that showed it as an eight sided building contradicts Hollar’s map even though other details from Hollar’s map are considered accurate, scholars, what they do is they compare maps to landmarks and buildings that still exist today.

这个句子是典型的托福听力当中的复杂句。

接下来我们来看一下语法句子的语法结构吧。

A句子结构

主句：【The map （that....building为定语从句修饰map）contradicts （谓语动词）Hollar's map（宾语）】
主干结构为：the map contradicts Hollar‘s map 主语包含一个定语从句
让步从句【even though other details from Hollar’s map are considered accurate】为主系表结构
Scholars，（同位语）（what they do 主语从句）is 【表语从句they compare maps to landmarks and buildings 「定语从句that still exist today」】这句话中有一个主语从句，一个表语从句，表语从句当中嵌套一个定语从句。

B其次，并不完全的遵从英语的语法规则，体现在两个方面。

1.  “what they do....“与前一句以逗号隔开，但是却没有明显的连接词，是不符合语法规则的；

2. 其次”what they do is they compare maps to landmarks and buildings that still exist today.“ 我们可以判断出来 is 后面是表语成分，表语为一句话”hey compare maps to landmarks and buildings that still exist today.“，由此我们可以判断出来is后面接的是一个表语从句，根据语法规则，从句的引导词that是一定不可以省略的，但这个地方并没有。

3. 连读和失去爆破现象
较长的句子，会出现多个语音现象，这种现象的集中出现，在很大程度上，会改变句子整体发音的效果。

比如下面这个句子：
This photo enlargement here is a life-size image of an actual space suit worn by astronauts on the last space shuttle mission.

其中，life-size image of an actual 这几个单词彼此两两连读，space suit 有失音的效果，suit 和 worn 发生了失去爆破，astronauts on 有连读，last space 有失爆。

在这个句子中，如此密集的语音现象集中出现，不仅改变了这句话整体的发音效果，而且语速、节奏也都非常快。听过原句的小伙伴会发现，整句话几乎没有停顿，一气呵成，节奏绵延不绝非常紧凑。
