The narwhal is a medium-sized whale that lives year-round in theArctic. The specieshas attracted a lot of scientific attention over the years because it has aperfectly straight 2- to 3-meter-long tuskprojecting from its head. Scientistshave long wondered what the purpose of the tusk might be. Three possiblefunctions of the tuskhave been proposed.

First, the narwhal dwells and hunts within the Arctic Circle, where the sea is oftencovered with thick pack ice. Like other whales, the narwhal needs air tobreathe and cannot stay underwater indefinitely. Eye witnesses have reportedseeing narwhals use their tusks topierce through the ice sheet from below. Theability to break the icein this way would give a narwhal access to air wheneverit needed totake a breath. That would make it possible for narwhals to freelyhunt in waters that are covered with ice.

Second, the tusk could serve as a weapon for fighting with othermale narwhals as theycompete for territory. Just as rams and maledeer charge at one another withtheir horns or antlers, male narwhals, it seems, may charge or joust with oneanother. Some observers have claimed to have seen aggressive clashing of tusksbetween male narwhals.

Third, the surface of the tusk contains many millions of microscopic holes connectedto nerves. This configuration suggests that the tusk serves as a sensor thatallows the narwhal to detect ocean properties, for example water pressure, temperature, salinity of the water, and even barometric pressure above thewater's surface. The ability to sense such properties would be an importantadaptation aiding in the narwhal's survival.

With the widespread use of technology, some people believe that long exposure to digitaldevices will have a bad influence on the brain development of children. Do youthink technology has made children less creative than they were in the past? Why?

Andrew
With therise of screen time and structured activities, children may have less time toengage in imaginative play and exploration, which can limit their opportunitiesto exercise their creativity.

Claire
By providing access to a vast array of information and resources, technology canexpose children to diverse viewpoints, cultures, and experiences that theymight not encounter otherwise. This exposure is instrumental in fosteringcreativity in young minds.

In the area today covered by several states in the American Southwest, the AnasaziIndians, who are sometimes referred to Pueblo lndians, once lived. The Anasazihad ahistory that went back into prehistoric times. They even experienced aseveral-hundred-year golden aged that ended around 1150. However, the Anasazisuddenly vanished only a couple of centuries later. Many anthropologistsattribute their disappearance to war.

Archaeologists have combed through the ruins of past Anasazi settlements. One feature theyhave noted is that there are a large number of places which were burned. Evensome of the Anasazi's ritual sites were burned. This strongly suggests thereason for burning was invasions of warring tribes. Many American tribes wouldburn the settlements of tribes that they defeated in battle. The fact thatAnasazi sites were burned shows that they too must have been conquered.

At these sites, archaeologists have also unearthed a large number of personal articlesthat once belonged to individual Anasazi. Many of these items, includingpottery, jewelry, and other personal effects, would have been valuable to theirowners. ln most cases, their owners would not have left them. However, manybelieve that because of a sudden onset of war, their owners were either slainor had not time togather their belongings as they left from approaching enemies.

There is also the geographical aspect of the Anasazi. Their settlements, which weremostly in modern-day Arizona and New Mexico, were located in places with abundantsources of water, a unique feature for the American Southwest. It wouldonly benatural that other tribes, coveting the rich land, would make war upon theAnasazi and attempt to drive them out, as they, apparently successfully, did.

There's no doubt the Anasazi left their cliff dwellingsin a hurry, but that doesn'tmean they did that because of a war. History shows that many places that wereoccupied for long periods have been abandoned quickly because of sudden andcatastrophic water shortage, a drought. What the reading passage interprets asevidence of war could just as easily be the result of a lack of water, whichthe Anasazi are known to have struggled with.

First, the sacred ceremonial grounds may have been burned by the Anasazi themselves asthey left the drought-stricken area. Ritual burning of places and objects is acommon feature of many cultures. Ritual burning can have a symbolic meaning byburning anold ceremonial place. The people are expressing the fact that theywill never return, and that they will establish a new ceremonial place whenthey find a new home.

Second, drought better explains why the Anasazi left behind a lot of possessions. It'sa better explanation than the one in the reading passage. In wars, theattackers usually take the goods of the people being attacked, but no one tookthe possessions that the Anasazi left behind. On the other hand, people leavinga drought ravaged area of their own choice are likely to leave things behind. All they need to take with them is whatever food and water they can carry andthey leave behind what they don't need.

Third, you read in the passage that the Anasazi population had gotten very large.Well, that's exactly what made it very vulnerable to water shortages. When theAnasazi population was small, water shortages had less impact on their foodsupply because a small population does not need a lot offood. But when thepopulation expanded, a water shortage could easily cause catastrophic foodshortages. In short, the Anasazi population became too large for the available resources, and that's why they abandoned their cliff dwellings for new siteswith more water and food.

In the next two weeks, we are going to be studying how biological discoveries haveaffected our lives. Research in biology provides us with a better understandingof how our bodies work. As an introduction to this topic, I would like for youto discuss among yourselves this question: What is the most important thing aperson can do to maintain good health? Please explain why you think so.

Claire
I feel very strongly that a good diet is the most important factor in maintaining goodhealth. Eating good, healthy foods, especially green vegetables, gives yourbody the materials it needs to stay strong. Good nutrition is the key to good health.

Paul
Most people dont visit the doctor for regular checkups.Sure, if they feel sick, they go, but thats not enough. During a yearlyexam, a physician can help a patient address health issues before they become alarger problem. So I think preventive doctor visits are key to good health.

Most cities in the United States have recycling programs, and people are constantlytrying to find ways to improve these programs. In the traditional system, people have to sort their recyclables intovarious types-paper, cardboard, aluminum, glass, and plastic. Inthe single-stream system, however, people canplace all theirrecyclables in a single container. A truck then comes to pickupthese materials and takes them to a single-stream sorting machine where thedifferent materials are sorted by type, recycled, and then sold for furtherprocessing. However, single-stream recycling hasserious disadvantages.

First,single-stream recycling can be dangerous for workers at therecycling center. While the sorting process for most recyclablematerials is done by machine, glass needs to be separated andsorted by hand from other materials collectedfor recycling. Glass isoften broken in the process of collecting the materials,so workerswho sort glass from the other materials are at risk of being cut.

Second,contamination-thatis, materials not being separated well from one another-is practicallyunavoidable in single-stream recycling. The sorting process is complex and farfrom perfect; the different types of recyclables do not always get sortedcorrectly. For example, plastic can accidentally be shredded along withrecycled paper. In cases when enough plastic gets mixed in with the paper, theoverall recyclable material is considered contaminated and cannot be processedfurther. So instead of being used in new products, the material has to bediscarded-just as though it had never been collected for recycling in the firstplace.

Third,single-stream recycling systems are expensive to build. A single-stream systemfacility generally costs more than three times what a traditional recyclingfacility costs. Most cities and towns have limited funds, and if they alreadyhave a traditional system that works, there is no reason for them to spend themoney to build a new,single-stream system.

Sing lestream recycling may not be perfect. Still, it's a major improvement overprevious recycling systems and as our best option for a recycling program.

First, what about the potential for injury to workers who sought glass? Several stepscan betaken to reduce the risk to acceptable levels. Workers can be givensafety training and bemonitored to make sure they follow the proper safetyprocedures. They are also required to wear protective clothing there should bequick access to medical help if an injury occurs. These measures can ensurereasonable safety for workers.

Second,it's true that some of the collected material gets contaminated and so ends upaswaste. But if you look at the overall picture, single stream recyclingactually reduces waste. Consider this placing all recyclables in a singlecontainer is easy and convenient. And that encourages many more families toparticipate in the recycling program instead of just throwing stuff away aswaste, which is what they did in the traditional system. Single streamrecycling greatly increases the overall amount of material that gets recycledand reused. This more than makes up for the small amount that's contaminated.

Third, while single stream recycling systems are initially more expensive to build, theyareless expensive to operate than traditional recycling programs. This isbecause you can reduce cost with single stream collection trucks. You see in atraditional system to pick up one family's recycling required two trucks, onetruck for 1 type of recyclable materials another truck for the other types, thefuel and labor cost for operating the trucks were very high. With a new system, you can just use one truck to pick up all recyclables which will save money.Once the initial cost of implementing a single stream recycling facility systemare paid for, the overall cost of operating the program goes down dramatically.

In today's context, there's a growing consensus that education should extendbeyond high school and college, encompassing lifelong learning. Imagine you'rea student engaging with this topic. Your input is sought on which specificfield adults should focus on for ongoing education. Given this perspective, thequestion to you is: Considering the shift towards lifelong education, whichfield of study do you believe adults should prioritize for their continuouslearning journey?

Andrew:
In my opinion, it's important for adults to have the opportunity to take foreignlanguage classes as part of their lifelong education. Learning a new languagecan open doors to different cultures, enhance communication skills, and boostcareer prospects. Plus, it's a way to keep our minds active and engagedthroughout our lives. So, I believe offering foreign language courses to adultsis a valuable way to support their continuous learning journey.

Claire:
I think art classes should definitely be available to adults as part of lifelongeducation. Engaging in art allows us to express ourselves, relieve stress, andtap into our creativity. Even if someone didn't have the chance to explore artwhen they were younger, providing these classes to adults can offer them a wayto discover new talents, develop new hobbies, and continue growing personally,no matter their age

Task 1
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? lt is easier to be an adultthan to be a child.Imagine that you need to take a course next semester andmust decide between two professors to take it with. The first professor is very interesting but has a strict grading policy. The second professor is boring buthas an easy grading policy. Which professor would you prefer to take the coursewith? Explain why.

Task2
removal of murals from Gym
因为这个mural已经褪色,hire people to fix需要钱,而且mural过时了。
1.Let students clean murals, they can treat it as an assignment
2.Murals are old, but they are interesting. Part of history.

Task 3
availability cascade

Task 4

Task 1
Imagine that you need to take a course next semester and must decide between twoprofessors to take it with. The first professor is very interesting but has astrict grading policy. The second professor is boring but has an easy gradingpolicy. Which professor would you prefer to take the course with? Explain why.

Task 2
2.是一个efficient use of school resources可以costless

Task 3
simplify cause effect

Task 4
第一个方式是鸟类能提前接收恶劣天气的预警并做好准备,比如它们耳朵里有特殊器官,能感知气压变化,从而提前储备食物等;

Task 1
When going on vacation in a different city, some people prefer to go camping in atent, while others prefer to stay at a hotel. Which would you prefer and why? Please include reasons and details in your explanation.

Task 2

Task 3

Task 4
