Somepeople think that children should be rewarded for their effort even if they arenot successful. Others think that children are being rewarded too often foranything that they try to do. Which view do you agree with?

Task 4
2.Feeding(觅食地):湿地为大量野生动物提供了丰富的食物资源。

Yourschool is going to limit the number of the hours that students can work atpart-time jobs in order to improve their academic performance. Do you thinkthis is a good idea? Why or why not?

Task 4

Some people believe that if employees have some free time during their workday, theywill be more productive. Others think it is better for employees to work allday without breaks. Which do you think is better?

Task 4

Marsupials and Placentals
Mammalscan be divided into two groups: marsupials and placentals. Although both groupsare mammals, there are several features that distinguish the two groups. oneofthe biggest differences between marsupials and placentals is the gestation andnurturing periods and process of each group.essentially, marsupials spendsignificantly more time nursing and caring for their young after birth thanplacentals. placentals, on the other hand invest more time and energy inpregnancy. this has ledmany biologists to speculate that marsupials areinferior to placentals for a variety of easons.

Marsupialoffspring spend a significant portion of their developing period in theabdominal pouch of their mother. this leads to slower development of specificorgan sand body systems compared with placental mammals. most critically, immune systems of marsupials' young are neither given sufficient time todevelop, nor arethey given sufficient time to be introduced to maternalantigens which stimulate the production of helpful antibodies. this compromisedand underdeveloped immunesystem puts marsupials at risk and is evidence oftheir inferiority.

Somemarsupials lack certain abilities that allow them to adapt to the surroundingenvironment. for example, the joey, a small marsupial, is unable to regulateits own body temperature and relies on external heat sources. for this reason, the mothermust carry the young joey in her pouch to keep it warm until itdevelops fur as anadult this weakness in survivability opens up both thecarrying mother and the young joey to danger.

Marsupialshave also demonstrated their inability to compete with placentals. in almostall the ecosystems in which marsupials exist, marsupial species have been inasteady decline to placental species which, on the other hand, havedemonstrated robust and steady population growth. this trend speaks to theinability of marsupialst o adequately compete for resources and nicheenvironments.

Contraryto the popular belief that marsupials are inferior to placentals, thereisstrong evidence that marsupials are just as well-equipped, if not betterequipped, tosurvive as their placental counterparts. Statements regardingmarsupial immunesystem deficiencies do not hold much merit as marsupial immunesystems are quite well developed. Marsupial offspring spend ample time in themother's nurturing pouch drinking milk.

Themother's milk is fortified with all the nutrition growing young require toreach healthy adulthood. Furthermore, the milk also contains all requisiteantigens young offspring need, passed on directly from the mother, to stimulatea healthy immune system. Young offspring are thus able to build resistances todisease in the same manner that placental mammals do.

It istrue that some marsupial species do not adapt to surrounding environments likeplacental mammals adapt. However, this fact does not imply that marsupials areinferior in any way. Let's take the joey for example. When faced withdecreasing environmental temperatures, the joey will in turn reduce its ownbody temperature accordingly. Reducing its body temperature is in fact a veryefficient method toreduce energy expenditure and reduce the amount of foodrequired to maintain bodily functions.

And asfar as placentals out-competing marsupials for habitat space and resourcesoneonly needs to look to Australia for evidence of marsupial evolution androbustpopulation growth. Australia has a long and well-documented history ofmarsupial populations coexisting alongside placental mammals. Over the courseof many hundreds of years scientists have noted the ability of marsupials tosurpass placentals in competition for resources and niche environments. This isclearly evidence that marsupials can in fact not only live side-by-side withplacentals, but also surpass their rivals.

Thisweek, we will be discussing space exploration. Some people think that it is awaste of money for governments to fund space exploration. Others disagree with thisview arguing that space exploration is a valuable and necessary investment forourfuture. They think that it is worthy for governments to fund spaceexploration. l want to know what you think about this topic. Do you think thatgovernments should fund space exploration? Why or why not?

Kelly
I don'tthink that governments should fund space exploration because it will betoocostly to build spaceships and develop related technologies. Though spaceexploration tech costs billions, it doesn't offer direct benefits to mostpeople, whichmakes its funding a controversial issue.

Andrew
Personally,l do think that all the costs will be worth it. The potential scientificdiscoveries and technological advancements could have far-reaching impactsthatjustify the initial investment. lmagine the new inventions that might comefrom this exploration. Such technology could greatly improve our everydaylives.

Somehistorians claim that the first people to sail around Africa were Phoenicians.Phoenicia was an ancient nation well-known for its seafaring achievements. Thehistorians base their theory on some ancient sources indicating that a group ofPhoenician sailors were hired tosail around Africa by an Egyptian king, Necholl, who reigned from 610 to 595 B.C.E. However, many other historians find thattheory unconvincing and point to a number of reasons why.

First,it is highly unlikely that the Phoenician sailors possessed the necessarytechnology to sail around Africa as early as 600 B.C.E. The ships they builtwere small and held together only with crude wooden pegs. Also, the ships hadonly one simple square-shaped sail. Whilesuch technology might have beensuitable to sail on the Mediterranean Sea near Phoenicia, it would not havebeen suitable for the long voyage in the open ocean around Africa.

Second,it also goes against what we know about Egyptian rulers of the time to suggestthat Necho ll ordered the expedition and hired the Phoenicians. AncientEgyptians are understood to have been generally uninterested in exploring theworld beyond their kingdom and the lands immediately surrounding it. Necho llwould have had no reason to hire Phoenician sailors.

Third,it is possible that the account of a journey around Africa recorded in theancient sources was just a story invented by sailors that later spread. lt wasnot uncommon for people of the ancient world to make up stories and pass themoff as truths, particularly when it had to do with the ocean. Stories of seamonsters and magical islands were also popular at the time, so in the same way,a story about a voyage around Africa could have been invented as well.

There'ssome additional information that makes the claim that the Phoenician sailedaround Africa much more convincing than the reading suggested.

First,it's true that Phoenicians used rather simple sailing technology, but thatdoesn't mean the voyage was impossible. In fact, recently, in the 20th century, some scientists and shipbuilders built a copy of an old Phoenician ship to seehow capable it was of sailinglong distances. They used exactlythe samematerials and techniques that were available to Phoenicians, 600 years B.C.E.and guess what? The scientists successfully sailed this copy of an old shiparound Africa. So Phoenician ships may have been good enough for a voyage likethis.

Second,it's true that the ancient Egyptians were generally not interested in exploringareas outside Egypt, But Necho the second was a rather different kind of kingin this respect. For example, he was very interested in water transportation, and started maior projects toconnect Egyptian rivers and seized through canals.Necho probably wanted to explore thepossibilities of water transportation ingeneral, for trading purposes. He could have hired the Phoenician sailors tosail around Africa to help him discover new trading partners.

Finally, the Phoenician sailors reported some facts that make it unlikely that theyinvented the story. They reported that when they sailed far to the south, theynoticed that at midday at 12 o'clock, the sun was in the northern part of thesky instead of the southern. Well, that's exactly what happens in the southernhemisphere. The sun appears in the northern part of the sky at midday. incontrast to what happens in the northern hemisphere where the sailors werefrom? This information about the position of the sun would be hard to invent. The most likely explanation for it is that the Phoenicians had actually gone tothe southern hemisphere and observed the sun themselves

Onetraditional method of classroom instruction is lecturing. Lecturing involvesthe teacher talking about a topic for an extended period of time and expectingstudents to learn by listening attentively. Today, some educators believe thatteachers shouldl imit how much time they spend lecturing and instead teach byencouraging in-classdiscussions and having students work in groups. However, some teachers still teachprimarily by lecturing. Do you believe lecturing is aneffective teaching method? Whyor why not?
Claire
Ibelieve lecturing can be an extremely effective way for professors to teach ifthey have strong communication skills. Some of my most memorable classes havebeen taught by brilliant lecturers who captivated me with their engagingspeaking style ability to explain complex topics clearly, and passion for theirsubject matter.

Paul
I don'tthink pure lecturing works well as a teaching method. Without studentparticipation, professors have no way to assess if students actually comprehendthe material. Students can easily zone out during long lectures if they arejust passivelylistening. Active learning through discussions, activities, andquestions lets studentsengage with content and teachers identify gaps inunderstanding.
