Debates on whether to build water turbines to generate power in the Great Lakes Region.
Reading
Pros:
1. Economic concerns: such a project would create more job opportunities, which is beneficial for local economy.
2. Cost concerns: the fresh water of Great Lakes cause little abrasive harm to turbines, which makes maintanence costs low.
3. Environment concerns: the utilization of water resources for power helps reduce the reliance on coal and gas, which is good for environment protection.
Listening
Cons:
1. The project would cause such enormous financial pressures that no private companies would be unable to undertake and no government would be willing to offer, and the costs would continue to rise for almost 50 years.
2. Fresh water is indeed good for turbines; when it's frozen in winter, however, it may crack turbines, causing heavier maintanence costs than expected.
3. Water that flows through trubines would be polluted by a kind of lubricating oil, which can no longer be used as daily drinking water, causing threats to water supply for millions of local residents in the Great Lakes region.
